Prior to the 20th century, wood was the major structural material for most houses and commercial buildings. Today, many houses and light commercial buildings are constructed using modern wood structural materials, such as roof and floor trusses, plywood and OSB. Also, an increased interest exists for using wood for transportation structures, including bridges.

This course is intended to provide the student with an understanding of the different types of wood structural material used in construction along with many factors that must be considered when constructing wood buildings.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the types of wood materials used for different components of building construction.
  • Describe the use of wood materials in different building components.
  • Explain the characteristics of post-frame and timber-frame buildings.
  • Describe timber bridge construction.
  • Explain insulation and moisture control for wood-framed buildings.
  • Interpret Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings for wood-framed buildings.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 10 questions. CPD credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
