A wind resource assessment program is similar to other technical projects. It requires planning and coordination and is constrained by budget and schedule limitations. It demands a clear set of objectives so the best assessment approach is selected. Its ultimate success rests on the quality of the program's assembled assets-sound siting and measurement techniques, trained staff, quality equipment, and thorough data analysis techniques.

In this course the student will learn various resource assessment approaches and recommendations for the use of a formal measurement plan, a monitoring strategy, and a quality assurance plan. The course summarizes the most commonly used siting techniques and addresses land leasing and permitting requirements for a measurement tower. It details the recommended measurement parameters and offers guidelines for incorporating other optional parameters that may benefit your monitoring program. It also describes the instrument components of a recommended wind resource monitoring station, including the performance specifications for basic and optional sensors. Finally, the course highlights data issues related to in-field raw data storage, data retrieval and protection, retrieval frequency, and documentation.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the guiding principles of wind resource assessment, including assessment approaches and objectives, the measurement plan, the monitoring strategy, the QA plan, monitoring duration, and data recovery.
  • Describe site monitoring for wind data collection systems, including the use of wind data sources, topographical indicators, field surveys, site ranking, tower placement, and land permitting.
  • Identify the parameters used in wind measurements.
  • Describe the instrumentation used at a wind monitoring station.
  • Explain wind measurement system accuracy and reliability.
  • Outline the installation of wind monitoring stations, including equipment procurement, acceptance testing, tower installation, equipment installation, site commissioning, and documentation.
  • Describe wind station operation and maintenance.
  • Explain wind data collection and handling procedures.
  • Summarize wind data validation, processing, and reporting procedures.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 30 questions. CPD credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
