This 4-hour course is the fifth and final in a series of five courses about fiber optic cable systems. The series covers fiber optics from basic light theory transmission to cables, connectors, testing, and signal transmission.

The course, Fiber Optics V - Equipment, explains the principal properties of an optical source and fiber optic transmitters, the optical emission properties of semiconductor light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs), and explains the operational differences between surface-emitting LEDs (SLEDs), edge-emitting LEDs (ELEDs), superluminescent diodes (SLDs), and laser diodes. Optical receivers and various fiber optic network topologies are also covered.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the principal properties of an optical source and a fiber optic transmitter.
  • Describe the optical emission properties of semiconductor light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs).
  • Compare the operational characteristics of surface-emitting LEDs (SLEDs), edge-emitting LEDs (ELEDs), superluminescent diodes (SLDs), and laser diodes.
  • Describe typical fiber optic transmitter packages.
  • Explain the principal properties of an optical detector and a fiber optic receiver.
  • Describe the semiconductor optical detector performance and capability requirements necessary for successful fiber optic system implementation.
  • Identify the main components of a fiber optic receiver.
  • Describe a basic point-to-point fiber optic data link.
  • Distinguish between digital and analog fiber optic communications systems.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. CPD credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
