The course is geared towards traffic and transportation engineers looking to develop mitigation measures to control vehicle speeds through residential and commercial streets in order to increase public safety, mobility, and overall quality of life.

Understanding what traffic calming is will go along way in determining its benefits and what would be the most appropriate selection for a given roadway section. Traffic calming measures come in different forms in terms of vertical and horizontal shifts, road diverters, enforcement, and signage/pavement markings. The benefits of traffic calming include enhancing public safety, not only for pedestrians and cyclists but also for motorists. With the increase throughout the United States of multi-modal facilities, it is very important that vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists are able to comingle safely within the same street network.

The course will explore the different types of traffic calming measures and assist in determining the best option for the roadway network. Not all traffic calming measures are viable for a particular street. Available right-of-way, presence of on-street parking, and utilities are some of the features that will dictate which traffic calming is ultimately selected.

Post-evaluation of the implemented traffic calming measure is important to understand if it is performing as it was initially set out to do. Points to consider are whether vehicle speeds are being reduced, whether conflict points have been reduced, and just whether the overall perception of safety has changed in a positive direction.
