Soil Mechanics - Subsurface Exploration for Effective Foundation Design
In Soil Mechanics - Subsurface Exploration for Effective Foundation Design, you'll learn ...
- Use of the area concept to streamline subsurface exploration program costs and obtain useful data during the design and construction phases of a project
- Practical guidelines for selecting proper sampling and field-testing methods
- Standard penetration testing (SPT) and cone penetration testing (CPT) methods, objectives, advantages and disadvantages
- Other in-situ testing methods, including dilatometer test (DT), pressuremeter test (PMT) and vane shear test (VST)
Overview
To design a cost-effective foundation for a structure to interact favorably with the soil on which it rests, a site- and project-specific subsurface model must be developed. Subsurface exploration is the first step in building a subsurface model.
This course, as a part of the soil mechanics series, covers basics of planning and execution of subsurface exploration.
This course is applicable to geotechnical, civil, mining, structural, and environmental engineers, as well as design and construction personnel involved with the planning, design, and construction of building structures that utilize soils.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain the principles and current practices of subsurface exploration.
- Plan and execute a site- and project-specific subsurface exploration program.
- Perform a field reconnaissance to assess subsurface conditions before establishing a subsurface exploration program.
- Explain the benefits of using geologic mapping and geophysical exploration before invasive exploration.
- Identify soil boring methods and equipment.
- Distinguish among sampling methods and the uses of disturbed and undisturbed soil samples.
- Apply guidelines for the minimum number of exploration points and the depth of exploration.
- Describe in situ testing methods used to establish site-specific soil and rock properties for design and construction.
Certificate of Completion
You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 35 questions. CPD credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
