This course is a recording of a live webinar. A pressure vessel is one of the most critical components used in industry. Before the first set of rules were published by ASME in 1914, thousands of people died in the US due to boiler-related incidents. As a result, some states began enacted rules for the design and fabrication of pressure vessels. But those rules had no consistency and oftentimes conflicted with each other.

In this course, we will discuss some of the basic requirements related to the ASME pressure vessel code, including maximum pressure, vessel thickness, joint efficiency, allowable stress, materials and NDE. We will cross reference other ASME standards that are used in this pressure vessel code to demonstrate how the industry standards are connected.

There are no prerequisites for this course. It is beneficial for engineers of all disciplines to learn the basics of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel code, particularly those working in industries that use pressure vessels. You are welcome to follow along using a copy of the latest edition of the code, but it is not required to participate in the webinar.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Elements related to requirements for a pressure vessel
  • Material requirement and where to find them in the code
  • How to determine allowable stress
  • Hydrostatic testing requirements
  • Loads and supports
  • Welding, Nondestructive Examination (NDE) and Post Weld Heat Treat (PWHT)
  • Minimum requirements to meet ASME code vs user requirements

Video on Demand

This course is a recorded version of a live lecture and will be streamed directly to your computer's media player. Our format is generally compatible with media players included with all computers and mobile devices. After watching the video presentation, you will return to your account to take the online quiz. While this is a recording of a live presentation, please note that this recording will not qualify as a "live" or "interactive" continuing education activity in those jurisdictions where it is required.
