Overview
This Video on Demand course is a recording of a live webinar that was held by PDHengineer. As a recording of a live event, you will hear the discussion that occurred between the instructor and those who attended this webinar.

In Unreinforced Slope Stability (Video On Demand), you'll learn ...

  • How the stability of a slope changes as the properties of the soil change throughout the year and what causes these changes (time, seasonal changes, etc.)
  • How various soil properties and water conditions contribute to slope stability
  • Performing an analysis on a slope for the unreinforced case in both the infinite and rotational failure conditions

This course will address slope analysis from three different cases—cut slopes, fill slopes, and failed slopes. We will discuss factors that destabilize slopes (many of which may seem completely harmless) and how to prevent unintentionally lowering a factor of safety of an existing slope. We will also work through examples of how to analyze a slope to determine the inherent factor of safety based on the soil properties, geometry and water conditions surrounding and within the slope. The first half of this course will address infinite slopes and when the infinite slope condition applies. The second half of this course will address when a rotational slope failure should be considered and how to analyze the factor of safety by using the Bishop method.

Slope stability in both coarse and fine grained soils will be discussed, along with total and effective stress conditions. This course will conclude with an example of an unreinforced slope and how the inclusion of water and a tension crack influence the stability of the slope system and also look at a short case history of a catastrophic failed unreinforced slope along the side of a roadway expansion. While this course is for unreinforced slopes, we will mention increasing the factor of safety of a structure through the use of geosynthetics, but the details of this type of system will be discussed in a separate course. This course is a recording of a live webinar.

Specific Knowledge or Skill Obtained

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • The attendee will be introduced to the use of geosynthetics as a measure to increase the stability of a slope
  • The attendee will learn to identify factors that create slope instability
  • The attendee will learn what measures can be taken to prevent slope failure
  • Unreinforced slopes will be viewed from a theoretical, practical and numerical perspective

Video on Demand

This course is a recorded version of a live lecture and will be streamed directly to your computer's media player. Our format is generally compatible with media players included with all computers and mobile devices. After watching the video presentation, you will return to your account to take the online quiz. While this is a recording of a live presentation, please note that this recording will not qualify as a "live" or "interactive" continuing education activity in those jurisdictions where it is required.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 10 questions. CPD credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
