This course will describe and analyze a number of case histories involving personal injury and property damage in the marine and offshore oil fields.

The purpose of a forensic investigation is to determine the cause(s) of accidents or incidents, as well as to provide recommendations regarding the liability of the involved parties by performing an investigation based on engineering knowledge, inspections, review of witness statements and depositions, working knowledge of current standards, close examination of failed components, possibility of human error and other explanations for the incident.

In each of the case histories, the circumstances of the accident or incident are presented and conclusions regarding what happened and why it happened are discussed.

This course is relevant to mechanical engineers, marine engineers, naval architects, structural engineers, and health and safety engineers who have an interest in the marine and offshore oil fields and who are willing to testify with respect to the analysis of accidents and incidents, failure of components and structures, and liability of the involved parties.

This course teaches the following specific knowledge and skills:

• Apparent small boat defects can cause injuries (U.S.C.G. recalls)
• Glossary of tools and equipment used on the drilling floor
• Back disorders are often the result of "equivalent to lifting activities" and/or repetitive motion
• Disembarking from boat to platform is potentially hazardous
• Some accidents on passenger vessels and/or offshore are preventable by applying appropriate maintenance
• Unseaworthiness created by a deficient pilot chair
• Familiarization with various regulations (OSHA, NIOSH, ILO, UBC, API, ISM, and others)
