This course is targeted at the professional (engineering manager, marketing personnel, purchasing agent, materials engineer, mechanical engineer, new electronics engineer) who is not familiar with printed circuit boards (PCBs) but would like to become familiar with the basics of the process of designing and procuring prototype PCBs.

This course will provide the student with knowledge of the constituent parts of a printed circuit board, PCB design considerations, and the process of procuring prototype PCBs. The student will also be introduced to various vendors that can provide inexpensive or quick-turn PCB prototypes. In addition, the student will also learn the types of design files that are required by those vendors to produce prototypes.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Interpret the basic construction of a PCB and demonstrate understanding through an assessment question or scenario.
  • Select types of solder masks, including LPI and screened solder masks, with sufficient accuracy to distinguish them from related concepts.
  • Characterize silkscreening to facilitate PCB inspection and rework of defective PCB assemblies and demonstrate understanding through an assessment question or scenario.
  • Outline traces, lands, and holes on a PCB and demonstrate understanding through an assessment question or scenario.
  • Distinguish PCB layout software options and demonstrate understanding through an assessment question or scenario.
  • Determine PCB design considerations, including EMI, component package types, and PCB grouping, using course principles and given data.
  • Classify file types needed for ordering a prototype PCB and demonstrate understanding through an assessment question or scenario.
  • Solve problems involving design considerations for cost reduction using course principles and given data.
  • Relate typical costs and delivery times for a PCB, as well as for expedited delivery and demonstrate understanding through an assessment question or scenario.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 20 questions. CPD credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
