Reliability of the electric system is measured by the weakest link. From a rating perspective, a circuit that is ten miles long may be limited by a section that is only 50 feet in length. This course compares the reliability of the overhead and underground transmission systems and compares various transmission substation designs, how they operate under normal conditions and during faults, breaker failure, etc.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the key components of a transmission system.
  • Describe common transmission-substation designs and the reliability of each design.
  • Compare the reliability of underground (UG) and overhead (OH) transmission lines.
  • Explain how weather events affect UG and OH transmission systems differently.
  • Describe the impact of oil-filled cables on UG transmission-line reliability.
  • Compare the reliability of straight-bus, ring-bus, double-ring-bus, and breaker-and-a-half substation designs.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 12 questions. CPD credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
