Temporary sediment basins are just one structural best management practice (BMP) used to mitigate erosion and provide sediment control in disturbed areas during construction. Temporary sediment basins are used to detain runoff so that sediment will settle in the basin before it is released. Temporary sediment basins protect the surrounding properties and drainage ways from sediments caused by erosion. The size of the temporary sediment basin is determined by the size of the drainage area, the soil type, and rainfall intensity.

This 1-hour course will cover the design and the operational benefits of temporary sediments basins. Design criteria will be covered, followed by an example problem to illustrate the methodology for designing a temporary sediment basin.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Calculate sediment basins based on the drainage area.
  • Demonstrate the design of the principal spillway.
  • Identify types of outlet treatments for a sediment basin.
  • Describe when to utilize an anti-seep collar.
  • Design anti-flotation devices for risers.
  • Explain when to use baffles in temporary sediment basins.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 10 questions. CPD credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
