This course covers the requirements for machinery emergency stops, primarily in the packaging and product handling industries. The course identifies applicable standards which may be applied to the design of E-stops, with particular emphasis on the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 79, Electrical Standard for Industrial Machines (Copyright© 2011).

The purpose of this course is not to assess the risk or the safety of E-stop designs for machinery, but rather how to determine applicable approaches to ensure compliance with applicable standards.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the standards applicable to machine design for equipment manufactured in the United States.
  • Locate standards and regulatory requirements for emergency stop circuits.
  • Describe the standards used for machine design in the European market.

  • Explain the critical functions of a stop and an emergency stop.
  • Identify standards applicable to conveyors.
  • Describe emergency stop circuits for variable-frequency drives (VFDs).
