In the construction industry, asbestos is found in installed products such as sprayed-on fireproofing, pipe insulation, floor tiles, cement pipe and sheet, roofing felts and shingles, ceiling tiles, fire-resistant drywall, drywall joint compounds, and acoustical products. Exposure to asbestos can cause disabling or fatal diseases, whose symptoms generally do not appear for 20 or more years after initial exposure.

This course reviews and discusses the OSHA requirements regulating asbestos in the construction industry contained in 29 CFR Part 1926.1101. In particular, the course covers OSHA requirements for exposure assessment, medical surveillance, recordkeeping, competent persons, regulated areas, and hazard communication. It also identifies the specific methods of compliance for each class of asbestos work in construction.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize asbestos hazards and distinguish the four OSHA classes of asbestos construction work.
  • Interpret OSHA requirements for exposure monitoring, medical surveillance, records, training, hazard communication, and competent-person duties.
  • Apply required respiratory protection, protective clothing, hygiene, housekeeping, and work-practice controls to representative asbestos tasks.
  • Verify compliance requirements for a given Class I–IV asbestos construction scenario.

Certificate of Completion

You will be able to immediately print a certificate of completion after passing a multiple-choice quiz consisting of 25 questions. CPD credits are not awarded until the course is completed and quiz is passed.
